Church joins fight against FGM in Kuria

The Catholic Church in Kuria region, Migori County has joined the government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) by asking the community to stop the outlawed cultural practice.

Speaking during a meeting that brought together over 200 girls from Kuria region, Father James Kumba from Kibaroti Catholic Church said the church does not support FGM, adding that they would continue to denounce the practice.

“It is unfortunate that most girls have been denied the opportunity to associate freely because of the fear of undergoing the outlawed FGM practice,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by Father Joseph Matiku who added that the Bible does not support FGM and urged the community to shun the retrogressive culture that has undermined development in the region.

Meanwhile, teachers in Kuria region have said that girls who have not undergone the cut do better in school than those who have undergone FGM.

Lina Robi, a teacher in the area, said girls who have been circumcised cannot concentrate on class work, adding that FGM has increased the level of poverty in the region.

The past one month has seen intensified campaigns against FGM in the area, as the season for the activity approaches.
