Churches want return of Prime Minister post

The National Council of Churches of Kenya wants the creation of positions of Prime Minister and two Deputy Prime Ministers,a move the council says, will unite the country and end the current political impasse.

Speaking during a press conference, NCCK Secretary General, Reverend Canon Peter Karanja called on Parliament to amend the constitution to create the positions to prevent further division.

“NCCK recommends that Parliament should amend the constitution to include the position of a Prime Minister and two Deputy Prime Ministers and the restoration of the official leader of the opposition post,” Reverend Karanja said.

The current constitution however provides for a pure presidential system with a president as the head of the executive wing of the government.

Karanja however said their recommendations should not be misconstrued to mean they are calling for the formation of a coalition government.

“Our recommendations have nothing to do with leaning towards the opposition. This is a mechanism for Kenya to deal with its issues,” he said.

The clerics also called for national dialogue amid the political uncertainty calling on Kenyans to embrace political tolerance.

“We support the call for dialogue by all actors. We urge that the dialogue be expanded to include all Kenyans,” they said.
