Citizen TV and Inooro TV finally back on air

Kenya’s leading television station Citizen TV and Inooro TV are back on air after ten days of shutdown.

The two TV stations owned by the Royal Media Services Ltd resumed normal programming on Thursday afternoon, February 8 after being off air since January 30, when the government switched off transmissions of four TV stations; Citizen TV, Inooro TV, NTV and KTN News.

Citizen TV was the first to go off-air with NTV being switched off shortly afterwards. KTN News was the third station affected, with its signal being switched off two hours later.

At the main transmission centers in Limuru, Kiambu County, a contingent of security officers stood guard, surrounding the masts and barring engineers from accessing the area to turn the signals back on.

The TV stations had been switched off for providing live coverage of the controversial ‘swearing-in’ of NASA leader Raila Odinga as the ‘People’s President’.

The broadcasts of NTV and KTN News were restored on Monday, February 5 with Citizen TV and Inooro TV remaining off-air under unclear reasons.
