Waihiga Mwaura takes over Citizen TVs News Night show

Waihiga Mwaura will on Tuesday take over as the new host of Citizen TV’s News Night show.

The top news anchor has taken the reigns from Hussein Mohamed who ended his 10-year stint at the station last week.

Waihiga has been the host of the Monday Report show with co-anchors Trevor Ombija and Mashirima Kapombe.

He has also conducted interviews on the Daybreak show alongside Zindzi Kibiku.

Last year, he won the prestigious BBC Komla Dumor award emerging as the fourth recipient since its inception.

He was granted a three-month training program at the British Broadcasting Corporation’s headquarters in London.

In August this year, alongside his colleague Asha Mwilu, Waihiga embarked on an expose exposing the rot at an institution of higher learning.

The ‘Mara Heist’ exposed how officials were allegedly colluding to mint millions from the Masai Mara University.

Those implicated included the Vice Chancellor Mary Walingo, her driver Noor and other officials.

The exposé caused nationwide outrage forcing the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch investigations and officials linked to the scam stepped aside.

A month earlier, Waihiga and Mwilu had also worked on another investigative piece ‘Waiting on Health’ that exposed how Kenyans have to wait long hours in hospitals before they are attended to.

In February, Waihiga travelled to Nigeria’s fastest growing city, Lagos, to establish whether the challenges that motorists face on the road are similar to those in Nairobi.

Like his predecessor, Hussein Mohamed, Waihiga also began his career as a sports journalist.

An expose on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics scandal landed him in court in July this year where he testified against claims that his story was based on hearsay.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, his deputy Richard Ekai, and ex-NOCK official Stephen Soi are among sports officials who have since been charged with abuse of office and misappropriation of Ksh.55 million during the olympics.
