Civil society slams Jubilee for sabotaging NGOs

Civil society activists have accused the government of launching a witch-hunt against non-governmental organisations.

Speaking to the press on Monday in Nairobi, activists from Inuka Kenya, Katiba Institute and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) said the government was using NGO Co-ordination Board summons as a way of intimidating them.

The NGO’s watchdog had summoned officials of the three NGOs over audit queries and other illegalities, with the civil society now saying that the government “is instigating unlawful and illegitimate shuttering of NGOs on false allegations.”

“We are aware of plans to target, intimidate and subvert the work of civil society organisations in the coming days and weeks. This is part of a larger scheme to intimidation of institutions and organisations who have dared to dissent with or contradict with the official government line,” said Elizabeth Kariuki, the program manager Kenya Human Rights Commission.

The three NGOs which have in the past criticised the Jubilee administration on matters such as human rights violations perpetrated by government forces in counter-terrorism operations, have however indicated that they will defy the summons by the state regulator.

MUHURI Chairperson, Khelef Khalifa, was one of three concerned citizens who filed a petition at the Supreme Court on October 25, seeking to postpone the repeat presidential election that occurred on October 26.

The petition had sought to postpone the controversial presidential election, alleging the lack of preparedness by electoral stakeholders in the build up to the repeat poll.
