CJ Maraga appoints 15 magistrates to reduce backlog of cases

Chief Justice David Maraga on Friday appointed 15 magistrates to the Environment and Land Division.

The appointed magistrates will preside over cases involving disputes relating to environment and land.

They include James Sijenyi, Caroline Wattimah, Phoebe Kulecho, Carolyne Naliaka, John Aringo, Simon Arome among others.

In January, Maraga also presided over the swearing-in of 47 new resident magistrates.

According to the Chief Justice, the move was in a bid to reduce backlog of cases.

Maraga directed that the newly appointed residents work to reduce the backlog of cases in their stations.

He told the new magistrates that they must take charge of their stations and ensure cases are dispensed with in good time.

“…The office you have assumed is an office prestige and status but also one of great responsibility that demands professionalism, dedication, partiality, independence and above all integrity and accountability,” said Maraga.
