CJ Maraga lauds Kenya Law for ICT-based innovative solutions

A total of 69,874 decisions from the courts have been collected and uploaded on the Kenya Law website with a track record of 100 per cent upload of legislation within 48 hours of receipt since 2017.

Chief Justice David Maraga commended the institution for ICT based innovative solutions to the perennial problems of access to real-time, up-to-date laws of Kenya and case law for the public especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Kenya Law identified the need to capture and manage rich, structured data and metadata for Kenyan case law. The most memorable are the compendium of rulings on bail and bond that track decisions on the implementation of the Bail and Bond Policy Guidelines to guide the police and judicial officers,” he said.

The CJ was speaking at the National Council for Law Reporting (Kenya Law) Silver Jubilee Commemoration.

Kenya Law, which undertakes the revision, consolidation and updating of the Laws of Kenya, has made available 500 up-to-date pieces of legislation on the Laws of Kenya database.

This includes the flagging of provisions of law declared unconstitutional and publishing of up to 1,400 pieces of county legislation.

Eight Sectoral Laws, 12 Kenya Law Reports and four specialised digests on various topical issues of the law are also other achievements accredited to the institution as it marks its 25th birthday.

The Kenyan Case Law Database has been transformed from a simple collection of case reports, to a valuable, rich, structured dataset of Kenyan jurisprudence that enables the creation of new value-adds for Kenya Law and its stakeholders.

This has earned Kenya Law the Free Access to Law Award in South Africa in 2016.
