Chief Justice David Maraga has called on police to ensure the safety of judicial officers and Kenyans following the carjacking of of a Chief Magistrate in Kwale last night.

In a tweet on Friday December 22, the Supreme Court president confirmed that Kwale Chief Magistrate Doreen Mulekyo had been carjacked in what the CJ termed as a “shocking incident.”

“Last night’s carjacking of Kwale Chief Magistrate Doreen Mulekyo was a shocking incident to the entire judiciary,” he said.

The Chief Magistrate however was unharmed in the incident, CJ Maraga said.

The judiciary head also intimated that those involved in the carjacking should be held liable, saying that the police should endeavour to provide better security to all.

“I call upon the police to ensure the culprits are arrested. We want to see better security for all our staff and indeed all Kenyans,” he said.

This days after three men were arraigned in court on suspicion of shooting the bodyguard to Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.

James Wachira, Eric Njuguna and Everyncy Khalifwa appeared in court on December 5 and were charged with robbery violence in the incident that occurred on Ngong Road on October 24. This was a day before the Supreme Court was to rule on a matter concerning the October 26 repeat poll.

In early November, the CJ had said that the government, through Inspector General of police Joseph Boinett, enhanced the security detail for Supreme Court judges following the shooting incident.

The communication to newsrooms dated November 1 had sought to refute claims by a report published by Reuters that claimed the government had refused to offer Supreme Court judges extra security.

“Our attention has been drawn to a report by Reuters news agency claiming that the government has turned down a request for extra security for judges. The office of the Chief Justice wishes to state that this report is untrue,” read the statement.
