Clergy urges politicians to carry out peaceful campaigns

Maralal Catholic Diocese Bishop Virgilio Pante has urged politicians eyeing various elective seats across the country to carry out peaceful campaigns ahead of August 2017 General Election.

Bishop Pante warned politicians against engaging in hate speech and discrimination while campaigning, saying it would divide Kenyans.

He further advised residents to elect leaders according to their development record and ability to lead.

“Wanainchi know those who have been in politics for development [and] serving humanity and those who have been in politics for their own interests,” he said.

The bishop was speaking during an event at the Good Shepherd Seminary Secondary School to receive a bus donated by President Kenyatta as a gift for good performance in last year’s KCSE examinations on Sunday.

The member of clergy appealed to Kenyans to shun hatred and violence, urging them to pray for peaceful elections instead.

“Let us not go back to what we went through in 2007/2008 post-election violence. We fought with guns and knives and people lost their lives,” said the bishop.

Good Shepherd Seminary Secondary School Principal Father Paul Maina lauded the school for its stellar performance in last year’s KCSE examinations, noting that the school produced the best candidate in the county.
