Clinical interns threaten to down tools over allowances

Clinical interns all over the country have threatened to down their tools within 14 days starting Friday if all their grievances are not addressed.

Led by their chair Julius Masese, the clinical interns on Thursday camped outside Afya House demanding audience with Health Ministry bosses over delayed pay.

Masese claimed that they have not been paid since they started internship on the January 5th this year despite being allocated 3 billion shillings by the government in the recently read budget.

However, the Ministry of Health said it is formulating an internship policy to guide hiring of 1,000 intern diploma clinical officers countrywide into the payment program and address their salaries.

Clinical internship is an integral part of training for clinical officers and are entitled to pay with the main objective to become gradually responsible to manage clinical cases in pediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and communitary medicine.
