Clinton rouses U.S. expats in Mexico as she accepts Democratic nomination

Dozens of US expats in Mexico City gathered at the capital’s American Legion bar on Thursday (July 28) to watch Hillary Clinton accept the Democratic presidential nomination.

The crowd at the American bar were roused by Clinton‘s more upbeat view of the country than the dark vision Trump offered at last week’s Republican convention.

Clinton said it would be her “primary mission” to create more opportunities and more jobs with rising wages, and to confront stark choices in battling determined enemies and “threats and turbulence” around the world and at home.

Doug Hall hails from Georgia and told Reuters he was won over by Clinton.

“She delivered a magnificent speech. She did what she needed to do which is bringing the Democratic Party together with the many vows that she made to the Bernie Sanders supporters. But also at the same time she made it very clear to the world what type of strong leader she would be for the country. She showed her true character,” he said.

The former senator, First Lady and Secretary of State Clinton, who is now vying to be the first woman elected U.S. president, called her nomination a “milestone”, vowing to bring her experience in public office to the Oval Office.

“She is a person who probably has more potential and has more experience than most of our presidential candidates maybe in my lifetime. She’s been the First Lady, she’s been Secretary of State, she’s had all these really top jobs but it is one thing to know that and another thing to hear the power in her speech and her commitment and that is what I heard tonight,” said U.S. citizen, Jeanne Graham.

Clinton‘s rival Trump, a 70-year-old reality TV show host who has never held political office, has portrayed the country as being under siege from illegal immigrants, crime and terrorism and as losing influence in the world.

He has proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country and a wall along the border with Mexico to keep illegal immigrants out.
