Coast community want to be declared an independent tribe

The Munyoyana community in Madogo, Tana River County is pleading with President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare them a tribe.

Speaking to the press after a meeting attended  by Bura Member of Parliament Ali Wario, the community’s King Mahamud Wario said they want President Kenyatta to give them a code that will identify them as a tribe.

King Wario said that the Munyoyana community with over 30,000 people, have all along been identified as a `corner tribe’ and want the tag changed and added into the list of tribes in Kenya.

He pointed out that as a community they felt marginalized and viewed as lesser people with only 12 people in the entire police force, no one in the army and lacked ID cards making it difficult for their youths to get scholarships to join universities.

The King added that despite numerous efforts from the community members through their MP to have the issue addressed nothing was forthcoming in lieu of the fact that their MP took a motion to parliament asking the then minister of planning to explain the fate of the community.

The MP promised to take the matter to the president who he said was the only savior for the community.
