Coast region records highest Malaria prevalence rates

Coast region leads in malaria prevalence according to statistics by the Ministry of Health.

According to the Director of Medical Services Jackson Kioko, despite the country registering a drop in Malaria prevalence to clock 8% from 11%, coastal region registered a 4% increasing with the prevalence rate now clocking 8%.

Speaking in Kwale County during the commemoration of World Malaria Day, Kioko said that the Ministry of Health is doing everything possible to curb the disease that has been classified as the leading killer in sub-saharan Africa.

Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya expressed concern over the rise, saying that the statistics clearly show a need to put in place more combative measures to contain the disease.

Further, the Ministry says that increased cases of Malaria are witnessed in the lake region followed by the Coastal region while the Central region has the lowest prevalence rates.

Malaria infections have been attributed mostly to self-medication and failure in usage of mosquito nets.
