Coffee worth Ksh1m stolen in Kirinyaga

Police in Kirinyaga County are investigating an incident where an estimated Ksh1 million worth of coffee was stolen at Kaguyu coffee factory in Kirinyaga Central Constituency.

Confirming the incident, Kirinyaga Central OCPD Eliud Monari sa”d the suspects made away with 55 bags of coffee at midnight on Thursday October 6th.

‘The issue of coffee theft in the county is getting out of hand and it’s important to increase security around the coffee factories in order to prevent such incidences,” he said.

Two watchmen were guarding the factory at the time of the incident.

An off-duty watchman at the factory, Moffat Bundi, said the coffee stolen is worth an estimated Ksh1 million.

Monari added that investigations into the incident are underway, though it is suspected that the theft might have been an inside job as there was no clear evidence of a break in.

This is not the first time that the issue of coffee theft has been raised as last year. Stakeholders in the coffee sector have raised concern over the increase of coffee theft across different counties that is leading to huge losses.
