Community elder charged over impersonating advocate

The chairman of the Embu Council of Elders, commonly known as Nyangi Ndereri, was on Tuesday arraigned in court and charged with impersonating an advocate.

The court heard that on December 22, 2014 at the Embu Courts, Andrew Ireri Njeru, being unqualified, unlawfully drew and filed summons for revocation of grant.

He also unlawfully prepared a notice of motion and supporting affidavit and filed them at the Embu High Court.

Ireri denied all the charges before Principal Magistrate Robinson Oigara and pleaded to be freed.

He also asked to be supplied with the charge sheet and witness statements.

The prosecutor requested that Ireri to be remanded for three days at the Manyatta Police Station to enable the completion of investigations.

The court, however, released him on a Sh150,000 bond or cash bail of a similar amount.

He also directed that Ireri be given the witness statements and charge sheet, further instructing that he presents himself to the police when required to do so.

Ireri was arrested on Tuesday and detained at the Embu Police Station, days after he accused the court, local lawyers and the land department of colluding to defraud residents of their land.

He alleged that the lawyers and the courts were dragging land related cases so as to evict people from their land when they fail to pay the huge fees they charge.

The case will be mentioned on August 11, 2015 when the hearing date will be set.
