Community health workers must be empowered, MCA says

The Siaya County Government must motivate and effectively facilitate community health volunteers (CHVs) to enhance provision of healthcare services across the region, a county health official has said.

Speaking at the newly established Uhembo Community Dispensary in Koyeyo sub-location, Siaya County Assembly Oversight and Implementation Committee Chair Leonard Oriaro said the community health volunteers play a key role in identifying and preventing minor illnesses at the community level and thus need empowering to efficiently discharge those duties

The county health official stated that empowering the health workers would help reduce congestion at the limited health facilities in the county because they would handle preventable ailments such as malaria and only refer serious cases to the hospitals.

Mr Oriaro also stated that the committee had allocated Sh3 million towards the provision of medical kits that have anti-malarial drugs, antibiotics and malaria test kits among others.

He disclosed that all the 94 community health volunteers in Central Alego Ward have already received the medical kits and challenged the entire county to follow suit so as to improve the provision of better healthcare across the region.

He further stated that they plan to put up dispensaries in each sub-location within Central Alego Ward to ensure easy access to healthcare services across the region and encouraged the establishment of more health facilities to bring healthcare services closer to the people.
