Community To Benefit From Mara Revenue

This is after the Narok County government launched a community fund whose investments will be  ploughed back to the communities sorrounding the Mara.

The fund, signed into law by Narok Governor Samuel Tunai after it was passed by the County Assembly, will officially channel 19% of the total annual revenue collected from the game reserve to the communities.

Tunai said apart from promoting wildlife conservation, the fund would also promote the communities' economic activities and reduce human-wildlife conflict in the region.

The Maasai Mara Community Support Fund Management Board composed of eight members has been mandated to head the project.

The governor also said the County Government planned to enact a law to ensure all hotels, camps and lodges in the reserve have at least 70% of their employees drawn from Narok, in order to boost employment rates in the county.
