Companies behind Ksh5b health scandal named

The State Law Office has now released details of three companies linked to the Ksh5 billion scandal at Afya House a day after the files were reported missing.

According to a statement from the office of the Attorney General’s office, the full details of the three companies: Estama Investments, Life Care Medics and Medafrica are now available.

According to the statement, Ambrose Makanga Ngari and Esther Wahito Makanga are the directors of Estama Investments, which reportedly received Ksh1 billion from the free maternity kitty.

Life Care Medics, which was said to have been paid Ksh201 million in a controversial tender deal to supply foods and rations is owned by Richard Ngatia Waweru and Esther Wahito Makanga who are listed as directors of the company.

The third company, Medafrica, is said to have received Ksh34 million to supply unknown goods to the Ministry of Health.

A leaked internal audit report says the theft involved payments of millions of shillings to phony suppliers in the financial year 2015/2016.

The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission alongside the Ministry of Health have now set up special teams to investigate the alleged loss, saying that their report will be released in 30 days.
