Concerns over low girl child transition in education
The number of girls progressing to next levels of education in Embu County has been on the decline over a couple of years now.
Embu County Deputy Governor Dorothy Nditi has raised concerns over the high number of girls dropping out of school due to early pregnancies or child marriages.
Nditi noted that the average number of girls advancing to secondary and tertiary institutions is very low compared to the national statistics.
She added that most girls still do not enjoy fully the resources the government has set aside to improve their education and welfare.
Nditi said that early pregnancies, FGM and other crimes in the society are as some of the vices that have led to many girls not achieving their potential despite huge resource being set aside for them.
The Deputy Governor said that a third of the girls are not in school and that the transition rate to secondary and tertiary levels is worrying.
Embu County Director National Council Population Development, Beatrice Okundi, said that there is need for girls to get opportunities.
