Confusion as crucial file in Kenya Power corruption case goes missing

A crucial file in a corruption case against former Kenya Power boss Ben Chumo and other senior officers of the electricity company has gone missing, the court was told on Monday.

Prosecutor Alexander Muteti told the court that the original report on the alleged procurement of faulty transformers by the accused and which the prosecution is highly depending on could not be found.

According to the prosecution, the file from the Energy Regulatory Commission was under the custody of Kenya Power.

The disappearance of the file caused the trial of the accused not to proceed as scheduled on Monday morning. The court is set to give direction on the matter later in the day.

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has since ordered a probe into the disappearance of the file.

Mr. Chumo, suspended Kenya Power Managing Director Ken Tarus and 17 other officials of the electricity company are charged with several corruption charges over the procurement of faulty transformers worth millions of shillings.

The court released them on a cash bail of Ksh.1 million, or a bond of Ksh.2 million and a surety of similar amount pending their trial.
