Confusion as police block NASA leaders from accessing JKIA

Drama unfolded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday after police blocked a section of NASA leaders from making a press address at the airport.

The NASA politicians at the airport included Siaya Senator James Orengo, former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama, Woman Representative Gladys Wanga and former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale.

Police also ordered journalists who had gone to cover the National Super Alliance (NASA) press conference to leave JKIA, saying they will not allow a media briefing at the airport.

Journalists blocked from covering media briefing at JKIA

On Wednesday, police declared JKIA out of bounds to opposition supporters who were planning to match to the airport on Friday to welcome NASA leader Raila Odinga back to the country. Odinga will be flying back after a one-week trip to the United States and United Kingdom.

“The attention of the police has been drawn to reports that some politicians are mobilising crowds to march to JKIA to receive Hon. Raila Odinga. JKIA is a protected area hence access is open to bonafide travelers and all others with legitimate business at the airport who must at all times be subjected to the standard security procedures,” read a statement from Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet.

Meanwhile, NASA has moved to Kibra, a rally set to be held at Kamukunji Grounds in Shauri Moyo as a curtain-raiser for Odinga’s welcome party.

Kibra ODM chairman Jeckonia Onyango and his organising Secretary Sigar Agumba confirmed that they had been directed by party leadership to prepare Kibra grounds for the 2pm rally.

Mr. Onyango said that the venue change plan was arrived at after organizers learnt that a huge pool of security officers was deployed at the first venue if Shauri Moyo ahead of the coalition’s gathering.
