Four suspected con-men, described as notorious, were arrested by police in Nyandarua on Saturday.

According to area OCPD Wilson Kosgei, the middle aged suspects had been defrauding unsuspecting residents of millions of shilling under the pretense that they would sell them red mercury, a hoax substance of uncertain composition purportedly used in the creation of nuclear bombs as well as a variety of unrelated weapons systems.

Three of the suspects, among them one of the most wanted robbers, were nabbed in Rurii trading centre where they were allegedly waiting for a client.

The fourth suspect was arrested in Nakuru town by police officers who posed as potential customers.

Kosgei said several items, believed to be used in the manufacture of the fake mercury, were confiscated adding that further investigations are underway.

He said police also confiscated two vehicles, a silver Nissan Sunny registration number KAS 635N which belongs to Mr. David Kirimire – the prime suspect – and another unspecified model, registration number KAC 925B belonging to Mr. Peter Wachira Njeri, the second suspect.

The third suspect was identified as Peterson Kariuki Mbai and has been in the police list of robbers wanted for a robbery with violence crime that had been committed early this year in Gwa Kahii village in Rurii Ward.

The OCPD said the victims of the fraud had travelled from as far as Mombasa to buy the substance only to realize they had been conned.
