Consequences of not getting the Huduma Namba – Gov’t spokesman Kiraithe

There will be consequences for Kenyans who will not register for the Huduma Namba by the May 18, 2019 deadline, Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe said on Thursday.

Speaking on Citizen TV, Kiraithe compared the Huduma Namba to the national identity card (ID) and its significance in most day-to-day activities, saying that Kenyans need to spare time and register for the new number as it will be of equal importance.

“The consequences are very simple, if you are living in a country where you are required to produce your identity card at the bank or when your sitting an exam, at the end of the day unless you really want to be inconvenienced you will have to get it,” said Kiraithe.

He also explained that those who fail to obtain the Huduma Namba during the ongoing mass registration, will have to endure the hustle of camping at government offices to register.

“Whereas now you are only going to the local school or market and getting it… You will travel longer distances. At the end of the day you cannot choose not to do with it,” said Kiraithe.

Registration for the Huduma Namba, which had initially been challenged in court, has been met with a lot of criticism and skepticism over the perceived compulsory nature of the exercise.

While allowing the government to roll out the registration exercise, a three-judge bench ruled that the government should not make the exercise mandatory or issue deadlines for the registration.
