Residents living along the volatile border of West Pokot and Turkana Counties will soon benefit from The Masol Community Conservancy, which will help conserve wildlife, improve livelihoods and restore peace among the warring communities of Pokot and Turkana.

The Masol Community Conservancy, courtesy of Northern Rangelands Trust [NRT], has been established to promote peace in the area.

Among the areas which will benefit from the conservancy are Akiriamet,Akulo,Amolem ,Lochakula ,Kainuk and Sarimach.

Speaking on Wednesday during a peace caravan in Akiriamet, Masol Sigor Member of Parliament Phillip Rotino observed that the conservancy will play a major role in restoring endangered wildlife species, creating jobs and ending human-wildlife conflicts among the communities.

Rotino said that the community conservancy will promote peace in the area by increasing safety for people as well as wildlife.

Masol Member of County Assembly (MCA), Ariong’o Loprena, stated that the conservancy will help tame the cattle rustling menace in the area.

Ariong’o added that the conservancy will help in conflict resolution, taming livestock theft and road banditry as well as poaching.

He announced that the conservancy will also develop increased wealth and job opportunities through tourism and diversified economic activities.

For the last three months, relative peace has been realized in the area that has been witnessing armed conflicts for decades causing loss of lives and property destruction.

The chairperson of the Masol Conservancy, Joseph Lorengelech, observed that the conservancy will help in transforming the lives of youths in the area.

Residents welcomed the conservancy saying that peace has returned in the area hence need for development and consequently eradicating poverty.

A resident from Kainuk in Turkana County, Peter Akasavan, appealed to the government to help with restocking as many people who were displaced during the conflicts have returned to their homes.

He mentioned that the government should chip in and help locals who had fled away and are now in their homes.
