Conservationists protest SGR construction through Park
Members of communities living side by side with wildlife in Kajiado and friends of the Nairobi National Park on Monday, October 3 staged peaceful demonstrations to protest the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway through the Nairobi National Park.
Peaceful demonstrators dressed in Maasai regalia marched to the Office of the President at Harambee Avenue, seeking audience with the President over the construction of the SGR through the park.
The demonstrators, drawn from villages bordering the park, then matched to KWS Headquarters where they formed a mock human fence around a small section of the park.
The protests come even as the government continues to hold public hearings on the Standard Gauge Railway despite an environmental tribunal ruling that matters SGR be stopped until the case filed over the project is heard and determined.
The demos are in line with symbolizing the protesters’ resolve in defending the park from any further infrastructural infringement.
