Cop fighting for life in Mombasa after he was clobbered by mob over face masks

A police officer escaped death narrowly on Friday evening after an irate mob descended on him with kicks and blows in Mombasa’s old town.

According to reports, the police officer had attempted to arrest several people who were not donning face masks.

Reports also indicate that he was in plain clothes with locals assuming he was a civilian trying to solicit for bribes.

Photos shared from the incident showed the officer lying in a pool of blood outside a local shop.

His clothes were muddied and bloody, and he appeared to have sustained serious injuries.

Police officers from Central police station visited the scene of the incident and discovered the victim was indeed a police officer attached to the Tononoka police station working at the Coast General Hospital.

He has since been identified as Gerald Sumba aged 31.

He was rushed to the Coast General Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment as investigations into the matter commence.

Police are also pursuing one more person said to have been with the officer during the incident.
