Cop Nancy Njeri toremain in custody for 14 days, injured lawyer still at KNH

Cop Nancy Njeri will remain in custody for 14 days as investigations continue into the case involving a lawyer whose hands were slashed using a machete.

She had been arraigned before Senior Resident Magistrate Caroline Ocharo in Machakos Court on Friday.

Njeri, who is stationed at Makueni Police Station in Wote, is accused of slashing the hands of Advocate Onesmus Masaku at his house on October 7, 2020.

The advocate was rushed to the Makueni Hospital but later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi where he is receiving treatment.

When asked why the case was not presented before a Makueni court, the court was told that the suspect’s life was in danger because of angry residents.

The court then directed that the suspected be remanded at Wote Police Station in Makueni as she awaits completion of the investigation.

Over 10 advocates including Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi and his deputy Caroline Kamende are representing the injured lawyer.

The lead counsel will be Andrew Makundi, although Justus Mutia held brief for him on Friday.

Mutia is the one who clarified to the journalists on Friday that their client’s hands were not chopped off as earlier reported.

The case will be mentioned on October 23, 2020.
