Police in Mandera nab bhang worth Ksh.800K, two suspects arrested

Police in Mandera are holding two individuals who were arrested with 130kilograms of bhang.

The suspect Ali Ibrahim Ali and his accomplice was arrested by detectives from the DCI in Busle area of Mandera town with 26 stones after a tip off from members of the public.

The bhang is worth a street value of Ksh. 800,000.

While confirming the arrest, Mandera East Sub County Police Commander (SCPC) Richard Ngetich said the bhang is believed to have come from Moyale to Mandera town in transit to other major towns within the region.

Ngetich blamed the use of illicit drug for the rising crime activities experienced in the town and called on the religious leaders to take up the lead in advising the youth to desist from abusing them.

He said youths in the region have abdicated their daily economic activities and are deeply engaged in the vice.

North Eastern Regional Commissioner Nicodemus Ndalana who toured Mandera recently said he was concerned with high rate of consumption of bhang in the town.

Ndalana said the drug was even being fed to donkeys to interfere with their normal way of life while smuggling contraband goods from the neighboring Somalia.

He said the proceeds of bhang business was being used to finance the operations of al-Shabaab terror group against Kenya security forces and citizens and urged the culprits to desist from the business.
