Cops to be probed over fatal shooting of teen boy Machurusi during Kasarani protests

Police officers alleged to have been behind the fatal shooting of two people in Mwiki and Majengo are to be probed.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority said the two killings occurred separately on January 15 and 16.

“Investigations will seek to establish circumstances that led to the shootings and if the Police were justified to use that level of force,” IPOA said in a statement on Saturday.

Police were put on the spot over claims of extra-judicial killings and brutality while handling protesters in Kasarani.

Residents had taken to the streets to protest over the poor state of the Kasarani — Mwiki Road.

A family in Mwiki claims that police officers, who had been deployed to contain the protests, brutally murdered their 17-year-old son.

Stephen Machurusi had just concluded his secondary school education last year at Mona High school in Molo.

“He scored a C-plus in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and was eager to join campus to begin his journey of being an engineer. It is sad that his dream was cut short this way,” his sister Lilian Waringo told reporters.

His mother Esther Njuguna  was devastated when she heard that her son had been shot during the protests.

According to her, he had left home in high spirits headed to work outside Garden City Mall where he sold eggs as he waited to join university.

“Alikua katika harakati zake kuelekea kibarua kidogo ambayo alipata ya kujimudu baada ya kumaliza shule. Akielekea kwa kazi yake ndio alipatana na risasi ambayo ilimpiga kifua,” she told Citizen Digital.

The bullet is said to have struck him while he was walking to work, past the demonstrators.

Good samaritans took him to a nearby clinic but the health officers apparently said there was nothing they could do.

The Daily Nation reported that the clinical officers said the wound was too sensitive. He died shortly after.

Angry protestors then marched with his body to Sunton Police Post and recorded a statement.

The second person who was killed is believed to be Ahmed Majid aka Hemed, a popular young skater in Majengo.
