CORD accuses govt of excessive borrowing

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has hit out at the government for allegedly subjecting the country to unsustainable debt precipitated by excessive borrowing to finance its operations.

Speaking at the end of a two day retreat on Naivasha, Siaya Senator James Orengo, who is a member of the coalition’s management committee, said the government has set policies and implemented programs that have thrown the country into economic stagnation.

“The government has formulated policies and implemented programs or projects that have depressed production in circumstances where the economy is underperforming”.

Senator Orengo said the Jubilee government has sabotaging its own development agenda citing the recent removal of the Deputy Inspector General Grace Kaindi as an indication of laxity by the government to abide by the Constitution.

“The manner in which deputy Inspector General of the police was relived off her duties says it all and the reforms in the land sector have completely stalled rekindling historical injustices and intolerance,” said Orengo.

Teachers’ pay impasse

“We take great exception with the manner in which the Jubilee government is making unilateral and unconstitutional changes within the National Police Service.”

Flanked by coalition leader Raila Odinga and co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula, Orengo accused the government of undermining the court by ignoring its ruling on the 50 to 60 per cent.

The coalition asked the government to abide by the court ruling and pay teachers their salaries in according with the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruling made in June this year.

CORD expressed its support for the two third gender rule saying it will rally its numbers in parliament to support the bill by Gender and Equity Commission.

Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua also attended the retreat as a key guest. Others present are governors, senators and MPs affiliated to the coalition.
