CORD, Jubilee supporters clash in Nyacheki by-election

Tension was high at Mochengo Polling Station in Nyacheki Ward, Kisii County after CORD and Jubilee supporters clashed over voter bribery claims.

Ructions began after ODM supporters claimed that Kitutu Chache South Member of Parliament Richard Onyonka’s presence at the polling station was sinister, and alleged that the legislator was dishing out cash to influence voters to vote for Jubilee candidate Naftal Onkoba at the expense of ODM’s Maxwell Magoma.

Police were forced to step in and whisk Onyonka away in a bid to restore calm.

Meanwhile, two children from Turkana County are admitted at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital after they were reportedly shot on the eve of the by-election.

Reports indicate that unknown individuals visited the home of Josephat Ekeno, an ODM aspirant, but upon missing him, they shot at the two children.

At Lochuga Polling Station in Turkana, a gun battle ensued between ODM and Jubilee supporters, paralyzing voting exercise for nearly two hours.

Officers of the General Service Unit (GSU) had to intervene to calm the situation.

In Saka Ward, Taita Taveta County, two women were arrested for allegedly bribing voters during the ward’s by-election.

The women were later released after interrogation by police at the station.

The other area that carried out a ward by-election is Mosiro Ward in Kajiado West Constituency.
