CORD Postpones Referendum Launch Over Media Blackout

CORD cited controversy surrounding the contested digital migration as the major cause of this change in its plan.

Led by its leader Raila Odinga, CORD said there was no need to launch the bill with a majority of the Kenyans unable to access the information.

"We have agreed as a team that we need to postpone this launch since most Kenyans have no access to information and there is a need for them to understand the content of this bill," said Mr Odinga.

"If 90 percent of Kenyans are not able to watch TV stations after the Communications Authority switched off three media houses, then it beats logic for us to proceed with the launch."

The former prime minister, who was addressing the press at his Capital Hill office, accused the government of frustrating media houses by denying them the requested time to set up their infrastructure in readiness for the digital migration.

Raila was flanked by Okoa Kenya Committee of Experts led by its Chairman Paul Mwangi.

The CORD team said it is still pushing for a referendum to ammend the constitution on various issues.
