CORD should prepare for defeat in 2017 Duale

National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale has warned the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) of a bruising battle in the 2017 General Election.

Speaking at Likoni in Mombasa County on Saturday, Duale said that unlike in 2013 when Jubilee’s presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto faced the challenge of balancing between their campaigns and the cases at the ICC, the exoneration of the two by ICC has given them a freehand to run their campaigns effectively.

The Garissa Township MP further noted that Jubilee will win the 2017 General Election by a huge margin, than that experienced in 2013.

“With new IEBC commissioners in place, CORD will have no excuse when we defeat them flat-out in the 2017 elections,” said Duale.

Duale had accompanied Deputy President William Ruto in a visit of the area.

Meanwhile, CORD leader Raila Odinga has insisted that the 2013 presidential elections were not free and transparent.

Speaking in Tana River on Saturday, Raila said the elections were rigged to favour Uhuru Kenyatta, noting that true numbers show a CORD’s win of 5.8 million votes against Jubilee’s 4.7 million votes.

The results, which were bitterly contested by CORD at the Supreme Court, showed that Uhuru had garnered 6.1 million votes against Raila’s 5.3 million.

CORD’s efforts to contest the results at the Supreme Court were however unsuccessful with the court throwing out the petition on technicality.

Already CORD’s efforts to have a new IEBC are on track with a new report table in Parliament to institute electoral reforms before the next election.

The report, if adopted by the Houses, will lead to the formation of a new commission with seven members, adoption of electronic method of transmitting results and cleaning of the voter register among other recommendations.
