CORD wants Matiangi to resign over school fires

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) Members of Parliament now want President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to show leadership in finding a solution to the wave of unrest in secondary schools.

Led by CORD co-principal Moses Wetangula and ODM chair John Mbadi, the opposition MPs accused Education CS Fred Matiang’i of making decisions on education issues without consultations.

Speaking at Parliament buildings Thursday, the lawmakers stepped up calls for closure of all public schools and the unrest declared a national disaster, as more than 100 schools have so far been set ablaze.

Senator Omar Hassan and MP Millie Odhiambo demanded immediate action to tame the situation in schools, accusing Matiang’i of mishandling the education sector.

“We want Matiangi to resign. How can a school go up in flames immediately after Matiang’i left? Did he do it?” posed Senator Hassan.

There have been heightened calls for the government to close schools following a wave of arson attacks in schools across the country that have led to the loss of millions of shillings in property.
