CORDs anti-IEBC protests were successful Kalonzo Musyoka

CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka has termed their fourth protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as a success.

Addressing the press at Capitol Hill after their protests Monday evening, Kalonzo said CORD supporters were peaceful during the protests despite provocation from police.

He, however, expressed his condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed during the protests in Kisumu and Siaya, saying the coalition will take action against police officers who are responsible.

“We cannot rest easy knowing that people have lost their lives today because of unlawful actions from the police,” said Kalonzo.

“We are not short of qualified lawyers who will take up the matter to ensure justice is served.”

Kalonzo further accused police of arresting Suna East MP Junet, Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Thadeus Rajwayi terming their actions as unlawful.

He said CORD’s protests are within the law and in line with the Constitution claiming they notified the police that they will be having protests every Monday.

“I wonder what kind of notification the police want. If they do not take note that they should know that the international community is,” said Kalonzo.

“In fact the move by a Jubilee MP (Moses Kuria) to write to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon regarding the anti-IEBC protests are a relief because it notifies the world of the discontent that we have with the electoral commission.”

He blamed Jubilee and IEBC for the loss of life in Monday’s protests saying the electoral commission should listen to the voices of disgruntlement from Kenyans and resign.

In his address, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula accused police of using live bullets in dispersing protesters in Kisumu and Siaya saying the coalition will not relent in their calls for the resignation of the commissioners.

CORD’s fourth protest, like their past three, was thwarted after police lobbed teargas at the protesters using water cannons to disperse them.
