Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has suspended all boda boda and tuk tuk operations in the county in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

In a statement issued on Monday, Governor Mutua said boba bodas, maruti and tuk tuks will not be be allowed to operate for the next two weeks beginning Wednesday, March 25, adding that he will exempt them from paying taxes for the remaining part of the year.

“From Wednesday, March 25, 5am, no Boda Bodas, Maruti or Tuktuks will be allowed to operate in Machakos County for the next two weeks. Social distance cannot be achieved while still riding on Boda Bodas as separation between the rider and passenger is zero to 1 mm,” he said.

“To compensate and cushion them for the prevailing situation or loss of income, my Government is waiving all tax charges to Boda Bodas, Maruti and Tuk Tuks for the rest of the calendar year ( until December 31st, 2020).”

Dr. Mutua has also banned market days, miraa and muguka dens as well as pool playing areas, noting that “no groupings of more than three people will allowed anywhere in Machakos County.”

“Market days have been banned to reduce movement from one town to another… All markets in Machakos to be sanitized and fumigated and traders encouraged to operate safely,” said the Governor.

At the same time all Machakos country residents have been urged to be home and indoors by 7 pm every day, with those aged above 65 years being advised to restrict movement, stay home and avoid mixing with young people and children especially those who had just migrated from the cities and towns.

Meanwhile, the Governor has directed County Government staff to work in shifts, noting that no office meetings will be allowed.

“This is applicable to non-essential services. Chief officers to develop work shift schedules by end of today. No office meetings. All staff and departmental meetings to be conducted virtually, using the internet & social media,” said Mutua.
