Coronavirus: How to self-quarantine

The government of Kenya has continuously advised Kenyans coming in from abroad to self-quarantine for 14 days ever since the first case of the coronavirus (Covid-19) was recorded in the country.

But, exactly what does it mean to ‘self-quarantine’?

Ministry of Health Director General Dr. Patrick Amoth on Monday, while addressing a press conference at Afya House, took his time to explain to the nation the concept of the term.

For starters, according to Dr. Amoth, self-quarantine means that one is isolated in a properly-ventilated room on their own.

Preferably, one should have his/her own separate toiletries or hygiene facilities but, in cases where some facilities are shared, then one must take it upon themselves to decontaminate after every use.

Dr. Amoth stated that, for instance, one can be able to decontaminate the toilet by cleaning it using a mixture of one cup of bleach and six cups of water.

He also stated that the same mixture can be used to clean other items necessary during the quarantine period such as linen, tables and bed.

“During the self-quarantine period, in case you have a pre-existing medical condition, you need to have your medicines ready with you for the next 14 days,” he said.

“If you’re working it means that you don’t go to work for 14 days and you keep to your room.”

Dr. Amoth however cautioned against sharing other items like utensils and toothbrushes during the period of isolation.

The Ministry of Health Director General spoke as the government announced that the country had recorded one more positive case of the coronavirus, bringing the total number to 16.
