Corruption worsens in Kenya over the last one year

Kenya has failed to improve score in new Transparency International (TI) Corruption Perception Index dropping six positions to rank 145 globally down from 139 from a total 176 countries.

The report released by Transparency International, highlight the connection between corruption and inequality, which feed off each other to create a vicious circle between corruption, unequal distribution of power in society, and unequal distribution of wealth.

This year’s results also show a negative perception on the global level towards Kenya’s war on graft.

Over two-thirds of the 176 countries and territories in this year’s index fall below the midpoint scale of zero which is highly corrupt- to 100 which is very clean.

Speaking in a presser, Samuel Kimeu who is the Executive Director of Transparency International also announced that war-torn Somalia was ranked as the most corrupt country for the 10th year in a row.

Second most corrupt country is South Sudan followed by North Korea at position three.

Qatar, however, recorded the biggest fall of the year, dropping to 31st place from 22nd amid allegations of corruption surrounding its successful bid with FIFA mired in scandal to host the 2022 World Cup.

Top of the list of the countries perceived to be the least corrupt place in the world, is Denmark in Western Europe followed by New Zealand in Oceania and Finland also in Western Europe taking position 3.

The global average score is a paltry 43, indicating endemic corruption in most countries’ public sectors.
