Country to experience short rains Met department says

The Kenya Meteorological Department now says the country will experience short rains between the months of March and May.

In a statement to newsrooms, the Director of Meteorological Department, James Kongoti, said parts of Eastern Kenya are expected to receive minimum rainfall.

He, however, noted that parts of Western, Central and some areas of the northern counties are likely to experience near-average rainfall, while the Coastal strip is likely to experience average rainfall.

“Most of the Eastern sector of the country is likely to remain generally dry during the month of March. However, most of the seasonal rainfall is expected during the second to third week of March over most parts of Western Kenya,” he noted.

Rainfall in southern parts of the Rift Valley is expected to begin from the 3rd to 4th week of March and continue until end May.

In central Rift Valley, rainfall is set to begin from the 4th week of March to 1st week of April until June, and those of North-Western and northern counties set to begin from 1st and 2nd weeks of April and up to the 3rd and 4th weeks of May.

Farmers in Western Kenya have been urged to utilize the rains to enhance the agricultural productivity.

The meteorological department has further asked residents to exercise caution as they risk possible cholera outbreak especially in areas set to experience low rainfall.
