County accused of issuing liquor licences to ‘quacks’

The County Government of Meru is on the spot for allegedly issuing liquor and health licences to unqualified persons.

Meru Town Municipality Chief, Mercy Mureithi, said that the county government needs to vet those applying for the licences so as to avoid issuing them to people who may endanger other people’s lives.

Speaking after raiding bars and wines and spirits joints that were suspected of contravening the law on Wednesday, November 23, Ms Mureithi said that since the county started issuing licenses, several drinking joints have sprouted and open from as early as 6:00 am.

She said that a raid in Mjini Slums within Meru Town led to nabbing of a woman who was selling liquor in her living room where her children were.

The Chief has now urged the County Government to crackdown on such joints to ensure sanity prevails in the liquor sector.
