County exonerates Mama Lucy hospital of any wrongdoing in baby Dominics death

A task force set up to investigate the death of a three-month-old baby boy at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi, now says it is satisfied with the treatment and care the boy received at the hospital.

After interviewing medics and staff at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital over the death of baby Dominic Otieno, members of the task force, however, pointed out that the facility, like other county hospitals, continues to grapple with the challenge of inadequate resources.

The task force, which was also tasked with investigating other county hospitals including Pumwani, Mutuini and Mbagathi Level 4 Hospital, has recommended the establishment of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Mama Lucy Hospital to reduce dependence on facilities at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Dominic’s parents had complained that their critically-ill child had died after waiting five hours at the hospital for an ambulance to rush him to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment.

Following the complaints, Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero  set up an audit and investigations team to look into the death of the  three-month-old baby.

In a press release, Kidero indicated that if it is found that negligence by hospital personnel led to the death of the baby, then those responsible will face prosecution.

Baby Dominic had been diagnosed with chronic meningitis.
