County health crisis a creation of medics

Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya has attributed the current crisis facing health care provision in counties to medical staff who resist change.

Munya said the unrest by medical personnel that has been witnessed in various counties was not meant to press for a higher pay but to protest against the introduction of systems aimed at enhancing accountability and transparency in the health sector.

He said a substantial number of medical personnel who were benefiting from corrupt practices were not happy with county governments for sealing loopholes through which they were using to loot colossal amounts of money from their respective hospitals.

The governor made the remarks at Kenyatta University where he was the chief guest during the official opening of the first Annual Global Conference on Patient Care.

The three-day conference brings together various global stakeholders in the health industry under the theme “Training and Delivery of Universal Healthcare.”

Despite the challenges, Munya said counties were determined to make sure health provision becomes a success in the country.

He further added that health outcomes had improved by 35 per cent in the country while drugs intake had more than doubled in majority of the counties.

The conference host, Dr Titus Kahiga, said the they want to focus on how to enhance patient care in health institutions since medics were more focused on diseases and illnesses affecting the patients but not on their welfare.

He said healthcare had evolved over time, with technology and inventions making it expensive and sophisticated and in the process losing the human touch necessary in the process of patient recuperation.

Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda told the conference the institution was determined in shortly becoming a medical hub in the country and the East and Central Africa region.

Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda told the conference that the state of medical facilities and the issues of Kenyans trooping out of the country to seek specialised treatment should be a thing of the past since it will be readily available locally.

She said the university would be delighted to partner with counties in building capacity for their medical staff through the school of Medicine and Public Health.
