County plans to dispose 17 unclaimed bodies

Seventeen unclaimed bodies at Bondo Sub-County Hospital mortuary that have been at the facility during the past year are at a risk of being disposed by the hospital if relatives do not come forward to claim them.

According to Migosi Momanyi, a senior official at the hospital, most of the bodies brought to the morgue were victims of accidents that occurred on Lake Victoria.

Momanyi has appealed to people to come forward as soon as possible as they are proposing to bury the 17 bodies to create more space for other bodies since the morgue’s capacity is 45.

He added that at the hospital is currently looking for a permit and a burial site.

This comes four months after a lorry dumped 15 unclaimed bodies near a school in Machakos.

This was after the lorry transporting the bodies was involved in an accident near the school, leaving the bodies lying there.

The bodies were being transported from the county’s level five mortuary unit to an assigned destination for burial after remaining unclaimed.

The Machakos County for health, Naomi Muite, together with the health officers in the hospital had asked relatives of missing persons to visit the mortuary to identify the bodies.
