County threatens to sack striking labourers

Embu Hospital Level Five Medical Superintendent, Dr Henry Njiru, on Tuesday, October 18 put on notice staff who had downed their tools warning that they risk losing their jobs for participating in what he termed as an illegal strike.

Speaking to Citizen Digital at the facility, Njiru said that they will be forced to employ other casual labourers if the 45 workers do not return to work by Wednesday, October 19.

According to the Medical Superintendent, the workers are not employees of the County Government of Embu, thus the hospital will engage other interested and qualified persons should they continue with the strike.

He said that the hospital had contracted a recruitment company to help with the process if the casual labourers fail to report to work.

The workers, who are tasked with the task of cleaning, feeding the patients, and general maintenance of the hospital, have vowed not to resume duties until their grievances, including a pay hike, are effected.

However, the County Government says that they have been outsourced from Nero Company Ltd and that the company is supposed to give them the pay rise and address any issue they may raise.
