Couple Ties Knot During London Marathon 2015

One couple even decided to get married halfway through, stopping off in St Katharine Docks in the London borough of Tower Hamlets to say their vows, before continuing with the race.

“It's in a pub, a function room, in St Katharine Docks, so we'll just stop there, go in there. The registrar and everything will be there, have the ceremony and then head off,” said Laura Harvey, dressed in her wedding gown.

Others dressed up as giraffes, superheroes and even Doctor Who's Tardis – and most did so for charity.

Sponsors of the event, Virgin Money, said in 2014 that London Marathon runners had raised almost half a billion dollars for charity over the past five years.

As of September last year, the total raised for charity since the company took over as title sponsors of the annual 26.2 mile race in 2010, stood at 264.1 million pounds ($430.96 million), exceeding Virgin's own ambitious target.

Sunday's race was won by Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge who got the better of defending champion Wilson Kipsang by just five seconds in a fierce battle over the closing miles.

Women’s race was won by Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia ahead of Kenya’s Mary Keitany.
