Court convicts British national found with explosives in Mombasa

A Mombasa court has found a British national guilty of being in possession of explosives in Kisauni area, Mombasa County.

Jermaine Grant was convicted on Wednesday by Chief Magistrate Evans Makori who ruled that evidence presented in court showed that he had manufactured the said explosives.

The accused, who has been facing the charges since 2011, was charged with three counts among them, conspiracy to manufacture explosives with the aim of causing mass destruction.

At the same time, the court acquitted Grant’s wife, Warda Breik Islam, a Kenyan national, who was accused of being an accomplice in the offence.

The Magistrate ruled that that Ms. Breik, who was arrested a day after wedding the accused, was not well aware of her husbands activities or that explosives had been stored in their matrimonial house.

Another suspect, Frank Nyenyo, who was also linked to the case, was released after the court found that he had been accused wrongfully.

Nyenyo, who was found with a phone belonging to Grant, told the court he had picked up the phone in a public vehicle. He denied knowing Grant and his wife personally before the arrest.

The accused is set to be sentenced on May 9, 2019.
