Court convicts man who ran over K.U student, drove 3km with her body stuck on car

A Nairobi court on Monday convicted a man who last year ran over a Kenyatta University student and drove 3 kilometers with her body stuck on the car.

Sergent Dismus Gitenge Motongwa was charged with causing the death of 22-year-old Maureen Wambui Gachagua when he hit her with his car in July 2018 near NextGen Mall, Mombasa Road.

While convicting the accused, Trial Magistrate Elekta Riany said Mr. Motongwa was a dangerous driver as he was overspeeding on the material day.

“The number plate had blood that was confirmed to belong to the deceased,” stated the court, adding that the accused’s defense was full of lies.

The court heard that, on that fateful day, Mr. Motongwa reported the case at Lang’ata Police Station saying he had hit an animal and wanted to be given an abstract.

“No one can avoid accident, but the way one handles the case after is what matters,” noted the court.

The deceased was reportedly leaving a party near Next-Gen Mall with her boyfriend when she was hit.

Her brother, Nahashon Wahome, previously told Citizen Digital: “As they were crossing the road, my sister Maureen was hit by a vehicle and it sped off. When I went to the scene and as I was looking around I saw her leg.”

Motongwa – who was attached to Nairobi West Prison – was said to have driven 3 kilometres with the body before dumping it in South C Estate.

The number plate of the car was later found at the scene of the crime.
