Court detains driver of abducted Cuban doctors for 15 days

A Nairobi court has allowed police to detain for 15 days a driver attached to the two Cuban doctors who were kidnapped by Al Shabaab militants last week in Mandera County.

The accused — Isaack Ibrein Robow — was arraigned before Milimani Court Resident Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe where the prosecution sought more time to conclude investigations.

The case will be mentioned on April 30, 2019.

Doctors Landy Rodriguez (a surgeon) and Herera Correa (general practitioner) were on Friday abducted in Mandera town by alleged Al-Shabaab insurgents.

According to Police Spokesman Charles Owino, the two doctors were abducted and their bodyguard killed while on their way to work.

Medical personnel in Kilifi County have since demanded security to be beefed up in health facilities following the incident.

The doctors complained that most health facilities in the county are manned only by security guards who are unable to combat any incidents in case of an attack.
