Court detains suspects arrested over kidnapping of Italian woman in Kilifi

Three Somali nationals were Wednesday arraigned in a Nairobi court over the kidnapping of an Italian woman in Kilifi County in November 2018.

The suspects; Mohamed Abdirahman Abdile, Aden Hassan Mohamed and Ibrahim Ali Bayow were arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku, who allowed for more time to detain the suspects.

Magistrate Mutuku granted the prosecution’s application to have the suspects detained for 30 days pending conclusion of investigations.

According the prosecution, preliminary investigations indicate that the three accused persons were involved in the kidnapping of Silvia Costanza Romano on November 20, 2018.

In their submission, the prosecution told the court that several electronic gadgets had been recovered and are currently being forensically examined.

“The investigations are complex and require additional time and it involves a number of agencies and extends to other jurisdictions,” submitted the prosecution counsel.

During the said incident eight armed gunmen raided Chakama Trading Centre in Malindi, Kilifi County and abducted the woman before shooting and injuring several locals.

The three, who are suspected to be members of the Al Shabaab terror group, were arrested on January 18, 2019 in Garissa while in possession of firearms.
