Court upholds Governor Rasanga’s election victory

The High Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the election of Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga in the August 2017 election.
Justice Esther Maina ruled that the petitioner, former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, failed to provide sufficient evidence backing his claims that the election was marred by irregularities.
Justice Maina ordered Gumbo to pay Ksh.3 million as costs for the petition.
In his petition, Gumbo had asked the court to nullify Governor Rasanga’s re-election, claiming that the election was marred by irregularities.
He also claimed that the governor took advantage of his incumbency to influence voters through use of government relief food.
Speaking after dismissal of the case, Gumbo said he would accept the court verdict even though he does not agree with it.
“There is always another time. Let us allow Rasanga to work for the five years and in 2022 we will be back in the race,” he said.
